Cooking With Solar Ovens - Fabulous!

WE HAVE HAD MANY REQUESTS TO REPEAT THIS WORKSHOP, AND WILL LET
YOU KNOW WHEN WE CAN.  THE DAY WAS A GREAT SUCCESS, THE CURRY MEAL FABULOUS, AND WELL WORTH DOING AGAIN.
Cooking With Solar Ovens

Learn how to cook delicious healthy meals under the sun.
A great alternative to cooking with gas.
When: Saturday June 4, 2011
Start Time: 10 am
Where: Teatro Luna Azul
Cost: 400 pesos (Includes Curry Dinner) Sliding scale available

On Saturday June 4, we will gather at Teatro Luna Azul
in Las Tunas, Todos Santos at 10AM to prepare together the different parts of an Indian Curry Dinner using solar ovens.

The Dinner Will Include:
Vegetable Curry Dish: This will be a main course, blending different vegetables with curry to make a casserole type meal.
Dahl: Made from split mung beans.  Learning to cook this type of bean will teach you how to cook many types of beans.
RiceWe will cook Basmati rice, a delicate, white rice that goes great with curry sauce.
Nan: This is an Indian Flat Bread.
Samosas:  Indian version of an empanada.
Raita: Yogourt and Cucumber Salad.  Not made with the solar oven, but goes with the Curry meal.
Mango Chutney: Also not made with the sun, but enhances the meal and is made from local mangos.
Sweet Breads:  Even though solar ovens do not brown the food, you can still bake incredible breads in it.

The first food we will cook in the solar ovens, will be the sweet breads, so we can eat them early in the day.   As they are cooking we will learn how to make all of the different Indian Curry dishes in a hands on experience.  When the sweet breads are ready,  we will enjoy them first with coffee and sun tea.

While the different dishes of the Curry meal are cooking in the solar ovens, we have a few hours till the meal is ready. Since our Chef/Workshop leaders are all musicians, we will set up the round house for them to play music while the meal cooks.  If you would like, please stay and enjoy some live music with the Band 'Jaya'  in our beautiful location.   This is a great opportunity for community to happen, around music and food.  Or you may choose to leave for a few hours and come back for the meal.  When the meal is ready (around 3-4pm, we will know better that day), we will enjoy our Solar Curry meal together.

Our workshop leaders for the Solar Ovens are members of the wonderful band “Jaya”. (They played at the “Dancing in the Moonlight” fundraiser in March)  They have  cooked with solar ovens for decades and will share their knowledge and skill acquired from years of experience.  One of the members, Bolo, owned his own Vegetarian restaurant in Santa Cruz for many  years.

If the sun is not shining on Saturday June 4th, we may have to choose another day to use the solar ovens.
